Highlights and Advantages of the Course

Some highlights of the course are:

  • Video sequences to help students acquire lab techniques: To get to know techniques used to carry out experiments in plant stress research, students look at some frequently used methods in a concrete context. Four different movies show authentic examples of the methods of DNA microarray, PCR, plasmid cloning, 2D-PAGE, mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, eddy covariance and of methods that allow to examine stable carbon isotopes.
  • An innovative and highly interactive simulation tool, with which students can build up designs of field experiments virtually, and compare the design scenarios for several research questions. They learn which data they need to collect and they can virtually measure and analyze the data.
  • Interactive exercises and self-assessments with expert answers allow students practicing.

The main advantages of the course are:

  • Usage of the learning structures independently of place and time.
  • Self-paced learning path thanks to detailed material for distance learning and self-assessment tools.
  • Maximum learner benefit by combination of several modes of training. The course provides images, figures, demonstrative graphs and video sequences commensurate with text.
  • Opportunity to realistically train design and analysis skills without having to carry out practical experiments – a “safe” way to learn how to carry out experiments.
  • Acquisition of skills in using e-learning via the web, which will be advantageous for attending further online training within the PSC Master's Courses and Master's Studies in Plant Sciences.
